Recently in my drawimg I've taken to working over the surface with pencil, carving the image into it with a rubber, and working back into it and carving out until it's done.

By this method I'm able to achieve much more by way of light, mood and atmosphere. I still tend to put line and measurement first - it just gives me a helping hand with the tone.
